REINDEER, which came originally from tamed wild deer, and reindeer husbandry have been essential source of life for the lapps. The lapps followed a nomadic way of life dicrated by the annual migrations of their reindeer herds. The reindeer has been used to provide every need including transport for both goods and people. The meat is preserved by drying and skins provide fur and leather for clothing, footwear and bags. Horn provides decorative and functional items and powdered is believed by many to improve a man’s sexual powers. There are about 250.000 reindeer in Northern Finland at the moment.
Earmark
Reindeer live freely on the fells and in the forests of Lapland in the vast areas covered be the various reindeer herding cooperatives. Starting from early summer, the reindeer are rounded up into a summer corral where the young calves are marked with the same earmarks as their mothers. In the autumn round up, the reindeer to be slaughtered are selected from the herd, and any calves that were not marked in summer are given their earmarks. Each reindeer owner has a personal mark, making it easy to identify to whom the reindeer belong. A white female was a desirable member of the herd as they brought particularly good luck to their owners.
