Risku - brooch

RISKU – Use of silver in Lapland started centuries ago. Many symbols traditionally used on traditional Sámi ornaments are still used today for modern designs. The most popular piece of traditional jewellery is the round brooch decorated with discs, Risku, that is used with the Sámi costume. Its glistening, often golden discs depict the path of the Sun in the nightless night of the summertime where the Midnight Sun shines day and night.

The most popular piece of traditional jewellery is the round brooch decorated with discs, Risku, that is used with the Sámi costume. Its glistening, often golden discs depict the path of the Sun in the nightless night of the summertime where the Midnight Sun shines day and night. The jingling sounds made by the silver is also believed to bring good fortune. At festive occasions, the Sámi women wear risku brooches that have been handed down through the generations, and wedding dresses can have up to twenty risku brooches. The number of risku brooches symbolises the wealth of the family. Just as with the Lappish costumes, there are many types of risku brooches found in different districts of Lapland.
